Data, cyber & IT security are central economic factors for companies in a digitally networked world. According to a study by the German Association for Information Technology, Bitkom, 88% of all companies were affected by data theft, industrial espionage or sabotage in 2021. Cyber attacks have increased sharply in recent years. This has caused damages estimated at  more than 223 billion euros per year.

 

IT security in the capital region

IT security has been the focus of the ICT cluster since 2002. It is a central field of action in the current innovation strategy of Berlin Brandenburg and is highlighted by state and administration by as a technology field with great innovation potential in the capital region.

The state government, city administrations, IT industry, business development, science and regional IT networks are working together to meet the challenges and great opportunities of the cross-cutting topic of digital security. The ICT cluster brings together all the players and provides the plattformt o conduct the necessary dialogue. The Berlin state initiative Projekt Zukunft acts as a link to politics and administration and networks the media and IT industries.

Strongly positioned IT location

The digital security sector employs around 3,000 people in more than 100 companies, which generate an annual turnover of around 460 million euros.  

In the ranking of the best IT service providers by the business magazine brandeins, Berlin is right at the top.

Numerous specialist committees with an IT and cybersecurity focus are part of the cityscape of the capital region. At specialist events and congresses such as the Potsdam Conference for National Cybersecurity (HPI), the Public IT- Security PITS (Behördenspiegel) and the Annual Cybersecurity Conference (Handelsblatt), experts shape current IT security topics.

As a founding partner of DEEP TECH in Berlin, SIBB e.V. organises its own series of events on IT security technologies, the Forum Informationssicherheit. The Cyber Security Start-ups and Innovation Meetup also takes place regularly in Berlin. The Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) offers Berlin entrepreneurs a monthly IT security consultation hour at which specialists from the State Criminal Police Office provide individual advice.

Community initiatives and cooperations such as the Bundesverband IT-Sicherheit e.V. (TeleTrusT), and the association Sichere Identität Berlin-Brandenburg e.V. strongly promote the topic of digital security through joint projects, information and networking. The initiative IT Security Network Berlin-Brandenburg "it's.BB", combines the strengths of Berlin and Brandenburg companies, is the central contact point for the IT security region and promotes networking and cooperation among its members. Promoted and financed by the state of Berlin, the Digital Agency Berlin especially focuses on small and mediumsized companiessupporting them on their way to digital transformation with a detailed service portfolionumerous offers. A team of experts supports companies in digitising their processes. Together with network partners, the Digital Agency raises awareness of how the use of standard software and modern tools can reduce security risks and better protect companies. The Association of the Digital Economy Berlin Brandenburg SIBB e.V. networks the players in the industry and represents their interests in society, politics and business.

The excellent scientific work at universities, universities of applied sciences and research institutes promotes innovation and economic growth in the IT region of Berlin Brandenburg.
